Your domain is your website address, URL or universal resource locater.

What name you choose is an important part of your overall marketing plan. It should be relevant to your business and easy to remember. Keep in mind that your domain name is your internet identity, so choose wisely.

A domain name is much easier to remember then a bunch of numbers or letters, think of it as the text name that relates to your IP address. When your name is typed into a browser the name server associates it with an IP address and your website is displayed by the browser.

So what name should you pick?

Some things to take into consideration are:

1. Is it easy to remember? Can someone type it in from memory?
2. It should be easy to spell and should not contain more then 3 words.
3. If possible, use keywords in your name. Your domain name should relate to your business.
4. Do not use numbers or hyphens.
5. Stick with a .com extension if possible.

Keep it simple.

A well planned domain name is the first step to a successful marketing campaign. Three basic steps that you can take to make sure your name is marketable are:

Step 1: Make a list of words that relate to your business. Then remove any words that are longer then 10 characters. You can also use phrases if they are short and easy to remember. There should be no spaces in the phrases. Once you have your list check to see if your possible domains are available.

Step 2: Go to any domain registrar and search for the names on your list to see if they are available. GoDaddy is an excellent place to begin. A list of alternatives will appear for those names that are not available. Go through all the names on your list and once done you will then have a list of possible domains for your business.

TIP: For business websites try and find relevant domain names with an extension of .com only. This extension is well known and is considered the default extension that people use if they do not know the correct one. Try not to overdue it and buy every known extension. When you are just beginning remember that domain fees are yearly so consider the lifelong cost of a good domain. For most of us one is enough.

Step 3: Once you know which names are available go to GoDaddy and register the names of your choosing.

TIP: Do not pay for hosting if you already have a website set up! Forward them.

Here is the cheapest ($10/year) and easiest way to set up forwarding of a domain name:

- Go to GoDaddy and register a domain name of your choosing. This is an easy step-by-step process. Just make sure you do not sign up for any extras that they offer you. The final price should be about $10.19.

- Once you have completed registration (you will receive an email with your information), sign in to your GoDaddy account and go to "My Domain Names" under the "Domains" tab.

- Next click "Domain Forwarding" and then click on your domain name.

- Select "Enable" and then enter the URL of your existing website in the box. Click OK.

That is it! Very easy to do and now you can use your own domain for all your advertising!

Linking on the internet for any website is of primary importance. The main reason for this is that search engines value the importance of search engine rankings by the amount of websites that link to your website.

In this article I would like to go through some things that you can do to improve your search engine rankings. The most important part is that you need to build a high quality website. If other webmasters see it they will want to link to it because you have very useful content on the site.

You can start off by submitting to quality directories like Yahoo and Open Directory. Google has admitted that links from these will improve your ranking as these are trusted websites. After this you can submit to other second tier directories like Gimpsy.

Post frequently to forums including a link to your website with your signature. Write articles and submit them to the major article directories including a link to your site in your resource box. These will become viral in nature as other publishers publish your articles increasing your link popularity.

Finally, you can use link baiting to take advantage of web 2 traffic. This could be writing controversial articles with a killer headline and submitting it to story sites like Digg. If it generates enough interest it may just make it to front page generating lots of traffic and links to your website.

Now, you might notice that I did not say that article marketing was the most popular traffic source today, and I think that the reason for that is that people are generally lazy and are not willing to take the time to write a quality article.

Your job in writing an article is to persuade the reader to click on the website link that you should include in the authors resource box provided by the article directory. An important point to keep in mind is that the visitor has reached your article deliberately. They very rarely find it by accident. Most of the work has therefore been done by the article directory. The visitors sent to your article have chosen to read it, and you have to make the article interesting and relevant to their problem.

People visit search engines to get information or to have a problem solved. If they find your article interesting enough, or if you can demonstrate to them that you know a lot about your subject, they will want to find out more and will click on the link you provide to your website. This is article marketing. This article that you are reading right now. I write a 350 to 500 word article, post it in free article directories and content-starved webmasters come along and add this article to their website.

It's pretty simple really. You need to have something useful to say, some place to send the reader when they like what you have written, and a relevant list of article directories that will post your articles.

Why do it? Using the resource box at the bottom of each article I am able to send you, the reader, to someplace that should be of interest to you. This creates a link back to my website or webpage. It's a great thing for increasing popularity. Also, I get in front of more people than ever.

It turns out that a 350 word article is about the length of an informative email. There are a few tricks to writing the articles. And it's best to study those "tricks" so you can make the most of your article writing.

We now live in a time where we can write for the reader and still satisfy the search engine spiders (pieces of software sent by the search engines) who seek to understand just what the article is about. By understanding how the search engines look at articles we can write effectively and get noticed.

Look at the above title. Notice I put "article marketing" right at the beginning of the title. I am actually telling the search engine spiders what this article is all about. And its easy for you, the reader, to know what its about. See what I mean? Simple.

By taking the time to study Article Marketing and learning a few tricks of the trade, you can easily reach out and increase your popularity with the search engines, increase your visibility within your market and increase your credibility with the people who are getting to know you.
