Search Engine Optimization, Step Two: Create (or Refine) Your Meta Description

A Meta Description's overall purpose is to provide a brief explanation of a site and most importantly, to name the major items being sold. It can help rankings in search engines in providing more relevance to a site by giving spiders an accurate summary of its place on the net. As the words imply, a Meta Title names a site while a Meta Description describes the page to search engines and directories. In general, the Description can be considered a lengthened extension of the Title.

Writing Your Meta Description
When forming your Description, use common sense, logic and a touch of creative writing. If you haven't done so already, create your Meta Title first. Once you have the keywords and text used there, you can use that information to help in writing your Description.

The text amount should not surpass 150 words. It is meant to be a short rundown of your site, so keep it concise and to the point.

Most importantly- include major keywords in your description. There is more room in the Description tag, so include more keywords. Make certain they are specific, relevant and pertinent to the major items you sale. Always place your top keywords first within the text.

Avoid spam. Repeating keywords (more than 5 times) in your Meta Description may be viewed negatively by search engine spiders.

The Description is used as the summary in some search engine listings. So while keeping the text as relevant as possible, also make it inviting to potential customers. If a search engine uses a Meta Description and you don't have one, it will pull random text from your page. This can confuse visitors and may result in a lost visit to your site. Make sure you have Descriptions that educate, rather than confuse.

Include Meta Descriptions in all areas of your site. It is important for a site's homepage, as well as each Product and Category page. For these specific pages, try to keep the Description at about 50 words, roughly 2-3 sentences long.

Once you are finished writing, check your text from an outside perspective. Make sure it describes your site's overall purpose, products and entices you to go inside.

    If you read a lot of articles, youve probably noticed a box that includes a number of links at the end of each article. This is called the authors biography, bio, or resource box. The links located in the resource box are the authors payment for writing the article.

    Different authors put different types of information in their resource boxes, depending on their goals. Some writers add their biographical information into this section. These authors are trying to build up their reputation in a particular field.

    List-Building: Stick to Your Niches

    If you're new to online marketing, realize that you really can have one squeeze page and one sales letter. That's it! Your job is to drive traffic there. That's all. Just drive tons and tons of traffic there and be list building.

    It's really not smart to go into several different niches at once. Decide how you can drive as much traffic as you can a single system, so that it totally excites you. You want to be completely passionate about that system and test it like crazy to rev up the conversion. At the same time, you're list building around your niche and creating a business.

    The second thing that I'll do is write out my twenty article titles for the day so that I don't have to keep getting creative. I'll do this all in Word, so that I can add to it. I will write out twenty different things that I want to write about today.

    So for example, I will type in: "Article-writing, Article-marketing, List-building, Email-marketing, Niche-building, Internet-coaching." I will come up with twenty different things. That's my first step in my creative process. Then I'll go back in and I'll ask myself a question--I'll either ask about something.

    For example, Article-writing. I know that I've written a couple of articles about Duplicate-content. I'll go ahead and write the title out: "Article-writing, How to avoid the duplicate-content penalty in Article Marketing." I'll go through and write a title for every single one of them. Then I'll go back in and start writing each article.

    Sometimes, you'll run out of ideas. You'll get to two-hundred words and you'll just stop. Go to the next article. Write on that one. When you're finished writing that one, go back and finish the article that you've just done. I do it almost like an assembly-line system. It's almost like an assembly-line. When I'm writing these articles, a lot of times I will close all other windows--all other browser windows, on my computer. I won't answer any emails.

    I won't answer the telephone if it rings. I'm just very, very, very focused on writing those articles. So the number two step is to write the articles.

    If you run an internet business or home business, then you have to be a marketer.     Your visions of "instant internet riches" and fantasies of becoming "a millionaire overnight," have been once again given a patina of reality. And, oh glorious day! To get all this without really having to engage the brain or tax any muscle. It must be possible after all.

    Take a deep breath. It's a mirage, a rainbow with no pot of gold at the end or anywhere near. An internet business is not some genie to put you on easy street instantly.

    Is there a formula for success?

    Yes. Patience, commitment, belief, tenacity, enthusiasm (even when the situation seems all uphill and futile), concentration, creativity and work...lots of it.

    To succeed in running an internet business or home business you need to make your presence felt. You need to be on the map. And you need people who want to find you and your product or service. You need marketing. Getting completely submerged in the millions of web sites is easy. Positioning yourself in a visible position is what a successful internet business is all about.     There's a lot of trumpeting about niche markets, niche products and niche websites. That's the current buzz. I looked up the definition in The American Heritage Dictionary, and it read..."a crevice or narrow opening in a rock; a hollow in a wall for housing a statue." Hmm!

    I've been involved in internet businesses for some time and I know how challenging marketing a business on the internet is. I certainly don't need the added weight of a narrow, restrictive market. I will admit that there's money to be made from niche products, but the marketability of these products are very ephemeral. When the fad fades, you need to start the whole marketing process again for the next fad.

    Are you willing to do this continually?

    A much easier and more practicable method is to select a business that commands an established market, provides you a website or two, hosts the sites, offers marketing material that you can adapt to suit your personal taste, and has very low or preferably no start-up costs.

    Start with the right kind of business. This leaves you free to concentrate on the one activity that can really put you in the money -- strategic internet marketing.

    Many new marketers try to make this process so convoluted. At least they think it has to be. Certainly selling on the Internet must be some kind of voodoo. It certainly can't be easy since so many people are failing at it. How many you ask? Well, the estimated figures are that 95% of all people, who try to succeed with some form of home based business, fail. Those are pretty depressing numbers. But why? Why are things so bad?

    Well, one of the main reasons is trying to sell igloos to Eskimos. Or in plain English, trying to sell something to somebody that they just don't need or want. I don't care how great the product is, if the person you're trying to pitch it to doesn't want it, they're not going to buy it. It's that simple.

    Now there are actually two problems here. The one problem is trying to sell a product that nobody wants. For example, let's say you came up with a new browser and tried to sell it. This is almost absurd considering that you get Internet Explorer with any new PC and you can download something like Firefox for free. So sell a browser? The thought is almost insane. Yet, people try to do this...sell things that can easily be gotten for free with very little effort.

    The second problem is trying to sell something to the wrong market. If you have a great book on playing golf, you're probably not going to make many sales trying to pitch it at a general sports forum. Sure, there may be some people there who are into golf, but with such a broad base, probably not too many. You're much better off going to a forum that caters specifically to people who play golf.

    While this may sound like common sense, trust me, it's not. So many marketers make this same mistake day after day and don't even realize it. What it all comes down to is identifying your target marketing and advertising TO that market and that market ONLY. You don't want to waste your resources (time and money) on markets that probably won't be interested in YOUR product.

    Article Marketing Success - What I Have Learned from a Million Page Views

    Here I want to share with you, what I have learned after generating over a million hits to my articles and how anyone can get great targeted traffic and enjoy article marketing success...

    Quality

    If you are writing an article you need to have quality material that's interesting and informative. There are a lot of people who will write you an article for $5 - 10 and there of no use to you, as the reader will soon see the material is poor and never click through. Ideally, write the article yourself and if you want to use a professional writer, then make sure their experienced in your field of expertise.

    2 x Versions

    Create two versions of the same article, this won't take you much longer than doing one. You simply keep the same topic and edit a second article form the first and change the headline. I can write an article in about 30 - 45 minutes and edit the same one in about 15, so 2 x articles should take you no more than an hour to write.

    The first article is the one you want the search engines to pick up and rate and choose the best article directory for the field that you are writing in. Different directories rate higher or lower on different subjects and don't always assume the bigger the directory the higher it rates. Submit the article and then point links at. The more high quality links you have pointing at the article the better, so bookmark it and blog it.

    The second article can be used to get traffic from the rest of the directories.

    Submissions

    When doing directory submissions forget about quantity, again go for quality.

    You can submit to hundreds of directories - but it's simply not worth the time and effort, for the results you get back.

    There are thousand of directories but only around 100 are worth bothering with.

    I have spent considerable time building lists that only consist of about 30 directories - but I know they will pull significant traffic on my theme. For example, I have one directory with an Alexa ranking outside the top 100,000 yet it will give me as many hits, as directories in the top 5,000 on several subjects!

    It's very much a question of trial and error, simply submit to a directory and see how it performs on your subject.

    Headline

    You Headline needs to be keyword rich at the start and punchy, to grab your readers attention. A long headline is better than a shorter one; it gives the search engine spider something to bite on and gives enough words for you to entice readers.

    Format

    The longer an article is (and I often see articles of 1,000 words or more) the more chance the reader will be distracted, get bored and click way. The ideal length is around 550 words and no more than 750.

    Keep your teaser text short and to the point. All it needs to do is to tell them why they should read your article - you don't need any of the article content in it.

    When you write the article do NOT use long paragraphs - people find this intimidating and will click away. Keep paragraphs to six sentences or less and break up the article, with eye catching sub heads and bullet points.

    You must make your article easy to read, as they have to get to the resource box!

    When you come to the concluding paragraph, start to pre close them to your site. For example, you can tell them of other articles you have written on related subjects and they will assume they are on your site and click through.

    Resource Box

    Make sure you have a headline which has a benefit to the reader and use the text to tell them exactly what they are going to get at your site.

    Article readers want information, so free Pdf's are always good. Your resource box is your advert, so use it wisely. Stress the benefits of what you do and always have a high perceived free offer they can take advantage of.

    Click Through Rates

    Many article directories tell you how many people have clicked through to your site from your article and as a general rule, you should be getting at least 10% and preferably a 20% click through.

    Article marketing is one of the most effective ways of getting targeted traffic and I hope the enclosed tips help you achieve article marketing success.
