Here are the steps for keyword research:

1. Google Keyword Tool

Head on over to the Google keyword tool. It is a free tool to use and if you don't know the URL for it then just type in those exact words in the Google search and it should bring it up for you. Whatever your website is about, you should first search for the keyword that is the most common way to describe your website.

If your website is about how to train your puppy, then you should use the keyword "Dog Training". When you type in that word, Google will pull up all the keywords that people are searching for in that subject.

2. Good Pickings

When it comes time to pick which keywords you want your site to rank well for, you should make sure that the keyword as low competition. To find out if it has low competition, go to Google and type in the keyword with quotation marks around it. If the number in the top right hand corner is under 100,000 searches, you have just struck gold. Try and pick the keywords that are also receiving a good amount of searches per month as well.

3. Optimization

When you choose your keywords, it is now time to add them into your website. Try and put the keywords into main titles and throughout the content of your site. The main way that the search engines will know what keywords to place your website under is when you start the promotion of your website. When you promote your website by creating back links, make sure that your links are anchor texts with the keyword you want to rank well for. This is a sure fire way to shoot up to the first page.
