The Value of Gaining Organic Rankings

The value of gaining organic rankings for your website is assumed to be a good think in practically any marketing piece you read. As with any assumption, you should ask yourself why this is exactly.

The more internet marketing articles you read, the more you come to understand there is a lot of bias involved in the industry. People in the industry are simply hell bent on their particular position. Those that love pay-per-click placement will defend it to the death. The same goes for supporters of email marketing, search engine optimization and practically any other form of online marketing out there. In truth, each form of marketing has its pluses and minuses.

The value of gaining organic rankings is found in the long term effect. What does this mean? Well, it means that once you have the rankings you are after, those positions will continually produce traffic to your site, monetary transactions and profits so long as you undertake the basic steps to maintain them. Let's look at an example.

Assume I have a site selling remote car starters. The remotes allow you to fire up the engine of your car before getting in, which is nice if it is raining or you are in a bad situation. Regardless, I obviously want to get ranked under keyword phrases that people use to search for these starters. My keyword research shows there are two thousand searches a day for "remote car starters", which tells me this is a good phrase to go for.

I begin pursuing my search engine optimization effort. After a year, I move up to number three in the rankings on Google for my keyword phrase. Yes! I start receiving roughly 1,000 visits to my site each day. I convert these visits and 1 in 100 visitors thus making 10 sales a day. My profit per sale is $40 on average, so I make $400 a day or $12,000 a month.

Now, the real value of gaining organic rankings is in the long term effect as mentioned previously. If I make a reasonable effort to maintain this ranking, I should match this earning rate every day this month...this year...next year...and so on. There may be seasonal fluctuations when sales go way up [Christmas] or possibly down during a slow part of the year, but this ranking should consistently produce revenue on average for as long as I maintain it. This is the value of gaining organic rankings.

As a person providing SEO services, this is the part of the article where I should badmouth other marketing mediums. Well, I am not. They all have their place. SEO is the best in my opinion, but it has its downsides. The biggest is the fact it takes time for the rankings to occur. It can take almost a year for Google to get around to ranking a site, and that is a long time to wait. Pursuing other forms of advertising during this period makes sense.
